“What is this all about and why should I care?”

In late June, 2021, I quit my job at Amazon to pursue my life-long dream of running my own SaaS. I watched my Dad start his company as kid and have wanted to do the same for 30 years. I now have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go full-time on my idea, for up to a year (probably not enough time, I know), so I’m going for it!

I’ll post updates and learnings here as I go. To learn more about what drives me and why, you can read about it in “What’s this all about?” or read the short version in the Twitter thread, below:

1/ My dad started a software company when I was around 10. I remember walking out in the mornings, often seeing him asleep on the couch because he made ends meet doing after-hours support (customers were billed per call, I believe). Even though it looked exhausting, I…

2/ admired the fact that he was able to work independently because of his startup. I grew up always wanting to do the same. I’ve tried so many times, but haven’t been able to get traction (yet)…

3/ But I refuse to give up. I’ve always said that I’ll never be totally happy until I am able to do my own thing. I want to be able to make my own schedule, respond to my own customers, and even make my own mistakes…

4/ Even though I’ve “failed” to launch a startup so far, I’ve been so fortunate with success in other areas along the way. As a software engineer, I’ve had a great career. I’m currently a manager at one of the FAANG companies, and I’m so grateful for that opportunity…

5/ and everything I continue to learn. Still, every single thing I do (especially on my own time), is with an eye toward striking it out on my own. I’m pretty risk-averse though, so I just can’t bring myself to make the jump without some real traction first…

6/ Part of the problem has been that my past projects have all tried to be something new and novel. Not this time. I’m going into an established market with (what I believe is) an under-served customer base. If you happen to stumble across this thread and it speaks to you…

7/ I hope you’ll follow along!
